Is it possible, then, to build an unsinkable ship? Surely through hindsight and common sense--partially stemming from the original crisis of faith in technology that occurred after the sinking of Titanic--we can answer no. Innumerable variables can always combine to create unforeseen circumstances. In fact, Titanic's second sister ship, Britannic, had her building completion delayed until 1914 so that new safety features could be incorporated. Yet the damage she sustained after striking a German mine during World War I was so extensive that Britannic sank in even less time than Titanic.
